Rome, April 10, 2025 - The project "Building the Future, An Encounter with Greek Theater" returns, born from the collaboration between Fondazione Angelini - the organization that uses part of the profits of Angelini Industries Group to support initiatives for families, education and young people - and INDA Foundation (National Institute for Ancient Drama) to promote the dissemination of ancient dramaturgy among young people, bringing them to attend, free of charge, the performances of the 60th season of the Greek Theater of Syracuse, which will start next May 9.
Compared to the first edition, the number of young participants in the initiative has more than doubled (+128%). Last year, 6 schools took part in the project, with a total of 603 participants. In 2025, the number of schools involved has increased to 11 with 1,376 students who will have the opportunity to attend 2 performances in Syracuse free of charge: "Oedipus at Colonus" and "Electra."
At the same time, the number of tickets requested has also seen a significant increase. In 2024, 1,157 tickets were issued, while in 2025 the number has risen to 2128. An extremely positive result that confirms the growing interest and effectiveness of a project that educates young people through the beauty of theater.
The second edition of "Building the Future, An Encounter with Greek Theater" was presented this morning in Rome, during an event held at the Teatro Quirino - Vittorio Gassman. The event was attended by Sergio Marullo di Condojanni, Vice President of the Fondazione Angelini; Gianluigi De Palo, General Director of the institution; Marina Valensise, Inda Foundation's delegate councilor for the Institute of Ancient Drama; and Piero Petrucci, deputy director of the Lazio Regional School Board.
They were joined by two representatives of the Italian cultural scene, such as actress and director Sonia Bergamasco, who explored with the young people the figure of Electra, a role she will play in Sophocles' tragedy that will open the season at the Greek Theater in Syracuse, and writer and lecturer Alessandro D'Avenia, who spoke to the young people about how Greek tragedies still today teach them to deal with the complexity of human emotions.
The event was also an opportunity for students from the Marco Tullio Cicerone, Giulio Cesare and Farnesina high schools to bring to the stage their own adaptations of ancient texts such as "Oedipus the King" and "Lysistrata." It was a wonderful chance for the students to challenge themselves on the stage of the Teatro Quirino - Vittorio Gassman, a venue that has hosted some of the greatest Italian actors over the years.
Also attending in the audience were over 800 students from the other Roman schools that joined the project, namely Pilo Albertelli, Giulio Cesare, Marco Tullio Cicerone, Farnesina, Terenzio Mamiani, Luciano Manara, Bertrand Russell, Sant'Apollinare, Tommaso Salvini, Torquato Tasso, and Via di Ripetta.
"We are happy to accompany these young people on an extraordinary journey into the heart of Greek theater, through the powerful stories of Electra and Oedipus at Colonus," said Thea Paola Angelini President of the Fondazione Angelini. "These tragedies, though written millennia ago, still speak to our consciences today, urging us to reflect on fate, justice and the courage to face the truth. Theater is not just a performance-, it is a life experience, and our role is to encourage new generations not to be mere spectators, but protagonists of their own journey. Culture is the key to understanding the past and building the future."
According to Sergio Marullo di Condojanni Vice President of the Fondazione Angelini, "The Fondazione Angelini focuses on issues concerning young people, families and education. The project "Building the Future, An Encounter with Greek Theater" was created with this vision in mind: to educate young people through the power of Greek tragedy, which has always been an inexhaustible source of reflection and growth. We stand by schools, offering them valuable tools and content, and we support families by relieving them of the costs of high-level cultural proposals, as their access should not be a privilege for the few. We believe that educating through art and beauty is an act of trust in the future and a way to reignite in young people the desire to question, understand and engage in the present."
"This year as well," says Marina Valensise, delegate councilor of the INDA Foundation, "thanks to the support and contribution of the Fondazione Angelini, INDA will provide tickets for the thousands of high school students in Rome, who , with the help of the Lazio Regional School Board, have joined this wonderful initiative, allowing them to attend the performances of the 60th Season of classical plays at the Greek Theater. Once again this year, therefore, our theater program will be able to directly engage the younger generations, contributing to their education, allowing them to draw on the richness of classical heritage through the talent of internationally renowned artists."
